Technology Fee at Bellevue College
Bellevue College has implemented a technology fee for credit students at the college. This decision was reached in Spring 1998 by the Associated Students of Bellevue College after working with college officials to review the need and benefits for Bellevue College students. The purpose of this page is to explain the reasons for the fee, how it will be assessed, and what benefits it will afford Bellevue College students.

The primary rationale for the fee is simple: In order to be successful in almost any business today, students must have some knowledge and skill in the use of computers and computer applications. Bellevue College's new technology fee will help students obtain this essential learning by providing a quality academic learning environment that has current and up-to-date hardware, software, peripherals, and Internet access along with an opportunity to experience real world employment conditions.

The technology fee will ensure that all credit students attending Bellevue College have access to computers and related technologies, including college-managed e-mail accounts, Internet access and a wide variety of current software.

A common question asked by students is why doesn't the state provide these services to students? The technology fee is used to pay a portion of the direct cost of supporting and replacing computers used by students. Direct costs include hardware and software, lab support, technical support, repairs, maintenance and computer supplies, such as paper and print cartridges. The rest of the costs are paid for by the state. In 1996 Bellevue College provided $1,200,000 in direct and indirect costs for student computer access.

Without a technology fee, students would have limited access to computers. For the same reasons that Bellevue College is inaugurating a technology fee, similar fees have already been implemented at many universities and community colleges in the state of Washington.
