BCC Student Password
Information |
![]()
The following information is provided
as guidance for students regarding the use of passwords at
·
Passwords are the primary means of authenticating users to computer and
network devices within BCC’s managed computer systems. This is a security measure required by policy
and by state law to help maintain the integrity of the BCC networks and
systems.
·
BCC students may obtain login accounts for the Academic network, the
network to which all computer labs, computer classrooms, and electronic
classrooms at BCC are connected.
o
This login account will be the same account name used to access the BCC
Portal.
o
Students who choose to create a portal/login account will be asked to
protect their account information with a password.
o
Only authorized, registered students are allowed to create user accounts
for the Academic Network.
o
Student accounts regularly provide access to the resources available on
this network only. Login names and
passwords used to access the Academic (student) network will not function on
computers attached to the BCC Administrative network.
·
If a student is required to access Administrative computing resources
for any reason (i.e., part-time employment, internships), the procedure for
requesting and creating accounts described in the BCC IT Security Standard on Password Management will be
followed. Information regarding this
may be obtained from the student’s BCC supervisor.
·
Student users will be expected to comply with the Password
Security section of the BCC IT Security Standard on Password
Management (included below).
·
In addition, students are strongly encouraged to comply with the Password Selection section of the same
standard.
·
Login accounts and passwords of students not registered for the
subsequent quarters will expire and will be disabled at the end of the last day
of the quarter during Fall, Winter and Spring
quarters.
·
At the end of the last day of Summer quarter,
all student user accounts and passwords will expire and be disabled.
Password Security (from the BCC
IT Security Standard on Password Management)
·
Passwords will never be shared. Users alone are responsible for what is
done with their assigned user name and password.
·
Password controlled logins to the BCC network will be limited to one occurrence
only. Concurrent logons will not be
allowed.
·
BCC network and computer passwords should never be used for any other
purpose (i.e. free e-mail accounts, Web site registration). If these other uses are security compromised,
BCC resources could be compromised as well.
·
If a password becomes known or is suspected to be known by another user,
the password should be changed immediately.
·
Passwords should not be written down.
A written password is more easily discovered than one committed to
memory.
·
Users should be careful when typing passwords. They will make certain no one is looking over
shoulders. They will also be courteous
to others typing passwords and will not watch as they
do so.
·
Users should be careful when saving passwords electronically on
computers. Some dialog boxes, such as those for access to Web sites and other
connections, present an option to save or remember your password on your
computer; never select that option.
